TIPS TO AVOID SLOW PLAY :)

This is also attached as a pdf.

Slow play on the golf course is usually a condition that a golfer acquires over time as he/she acquires bad habits.  Or it is the result of the golfer never having been taught proper golf etiquette.

Before I list some suggestions for speeding up play, it is important to note that many of these tips have nothing to do with RUSHING your play, but rather with simply being READY to play and with using common sense and good etiquette.

1.      After teeing off, walk directly to your ball,  Members of the group should not travel as a PACK, walking to one member’s ball, then to the next.  Each member should walk directly to her ball.

2.      When 2 members are riding in a cart, drive the cart to the first ball and drop off the first player with her choice of clubs.  The 2nd player should then proceed in the cart to her ball. After the 1st player hits her stroke, she should begin walking toward the cart as the 2nd golfer is playing.

3.      Use the time you spend getting to your ball to think about the next shot…the yardage, the club selection, etc. when you reach your ball you will need less time to figure out the shot.

4.      If you are unsure whether your ball is out of bounds or lost, immediately hit a provisional ball so that you will not have to return to the cart to rehit.

5.      Begin reading the green and lining up putts as soon as you reach the green.  Don’t wait until it is your turn to putt to start lining up,  After putting out, don’t stand around the green chatting.

6.      When leaving the green and returning to your cart or bag, don’t stand there fussing with your clubs.  Do it at the next tee box.  Likewise, mark your scorecard after reaching the next tee.

7.      If you are the type who likes to offer tips to playing partners, save it for the driving range.

8.      On the tee, pay attention to your partner’s drives,  If they lose sight if their ball, you can help direct them to it and avoid any searching.

9.      When waiting on the tee for the group in front to clear, don’t be so strict about order of play,  Let the short hitter who can’t reach the group ahead anyway go ahead and hit,

10.  Limit practice strokes to one or two at the most.

11.  TURN OFF CELL PHONES

12.  Walk at a good pace between shots. No,, you don’t have to look like a race-walker.  But if your pace is described as a “shuffle” or an “amble” you might want to pick up the pace a little.

13.  Try to play ready golf, where order of play is based on who is ready, not on who is away,

14.  Do not start a conversation with another player if either one of you is “up”.

15.  If you are ready to putt and the person who is “away” is not, then you putt first,

16.  Use the continuous putting rule whenever possible.

17.  If you are the first person in the hole, pick up the flagstick so that you can replace it when the last person has putted,

18.  If you have bunker shot, take the rake in with you.

19.  Always be aware of the gap between you and the group ahead,  There shouldn’t be more than a half a hole open between you,  If you fall behind, advise the group to pick up the pace,  Do not be concerned about the group behind you if you are keeping up with the group in front of you.

20.  When using a cart on golf path only day, be sure to take a couple of clubs with you so you don’t have to return to the cart to get a different club.

21.  If a player loses her ball, do not help look for it until you have hit your shot.

22.  To check your time, remember that at Fox Hollow when you are teeing off on the 5th hole, you should be at one hour or less

23.  Never hold up play because you are in the middle of a conversation.  Put the conversion on hold, take your shot, then continue the conversation.

FINAL TIPS

Pace of play can be boiled down to 2 simple phrases:  be prepared and be ready to play.  Use the groups ahead of you and behind you to gauge your pace,  If the group ahead of you us pulling away—putting a full hole’s distance between them and your group—you need to speed up.
